McDonald's will introduce an old plastic toy recycling scheme at its stores across the UK and Ireland, working to turn unused plastic toys into new products

    .

In Ireland, McDonald's has launched a pilot recycling scheme at its Roscrea branch in Tipperary from 11 November

    .

After McDonald's collects plastic toys, it will work with suppliers to recycle them into new products, such as coffee cups, trash cans, outdoor play equipment and vegetable growers

    .

The initiative, called The Big Toy Take Back, officially launched yesterday at Roscrea and six other McDonald's locations in the UK

    .

McDonald's collection bins aren't just for recycling plastic toys from McDonald's Happy Meals meals; the trash can is 17cm in diameter, and any plastic toy that can fit in a container can be recycled

    .

The Big Toy Recycling Programme is part of McDonald's 'Better M' initiative to reduce unnecessary plastic and improve the recyclability of packaging in Europe

    .

Fast-food chains are increasingly being asked to stop handing out single-use plastic toys as parents complain that the items are quickly discarded by children and waste resources

    .

In addition to removing plastic lids from McFlurry ice cream, as well as single-use plastic from salads, and replacing plastic straws with paper straws, McDonald's hopes that phasing out plastic toys will reduce total waste by 1,005 tons per year

    .

Marco Ruggeri, McDonald's UK and Ireland's Home Marketing Manager, said of the Toys Back program: "These pilots enable home customers to participate in this continuous improvement, with their choice of toys or fruit bags, which is something we've seen on the market.
A pilot that started this month can also return old toys and remake them into new products for us

    .

Helen McFarlane, Sustainability Manager for McDonald's UK and Ireland, added: "It was important to launch a pilot campaign and we had to test this to see what our customers gave back and what we were able to create from old plastic toys
    .
    "

“We want to make sure we create products that are really useful from kids’ old toys
    .
This test will allow us to work with suppliers to create a range of new products that maximize the amount of plastic we recycle and reduce the amount of plastic we recycle.
    Demand for virgin plastics

    .

After the pilot, McDonald's will report in the spring of 2020 the results of new products made from these old plastic toys
    .
If the pilot is successful, McDonald's will aim to roll out a "toy recycling" program at all of its stores in 2020
