On November 23rd Intrafish announced that, after three years of unremitting efforts, the 150,000 tonnes of cod-based fishing in Namibia had finally been officially msC certified.
Foods Foods, which owns birdseye, Findus and IgIo brands, welcomed the certification and pledged to ensure 100 per cent of its fish and other seafood products come from sustainable sources by 2025.
Nomad Foods Foods says more than 95 per cent of its raw materials are now sourced from sustainable sources, and the company is increasing the proportion of certified raw materials, including Namibian cod, which it has supported for years in the certification of Namibian cod trawling and longline fishing, in the hope of becoming the first company to export MSC-certified Namibian cod to Europe.
no cod fishing industry became the first in the region and the second MSC-certified fishery in Africa.
MSC certification for Cod trawling and longline fishing in Namibia began in 2017 and a decision was originally planned for early 2020.
Namibia's Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Albert Kawana, said: 'Our efforts to rebuild the historically overfished cod population are a recognition of our efforts and a signal to retailers, brands and fisheries enthusiasts around the world that the Namibian cod fishing industry is sustainable and will survive.'
