    Nature paper interpretation! A natural protein has been found to promote the proliferation of muscle stem cells

    author of the paper is Professor Peter Currie, Director of the Australian Institute of Regenerative Medicine at Monash University.
    The researchers studied the regeneration of zebrafish skeletal muscles, which quickly became the animal model of choice for stem cell regeneration because zebrafish reproduce faster, are easier to experiment with, and share at least 70 percent of their genes with humans.

    studying cells that migrate to muscle damage in zebrafish, the researchers found a group of immune cells called macrophages that appear to play a role in triggering muscle stem cell regeneration.

    but the researchers found that there were actually eight genetically different macrophages at the site of the injury, one of which was specifically "cuddler."
    further investigation found that this emotional macrophage releases a substance called NAMPT.
    by removing these macrophages from zebrafish and adding NIMPT to aquarium water, the researchers found that they could stimulate the growth and healing of their muscle stem cells, "effectively replacing the need for macrophages."
    important, recent experiments put hydrogel patches containing NAPMT into mouse models with severe muscle atrophy, leading to what Professor Currie called a significant replacement of damaged muscles.
    researchers are currently in discussions with biotech companies to introduce AMPT into clinical trials to use the compound to treat muscle disease and injury.
