According to Russia Today, Japanese scientists have discovered a previously unknown virus that can infect humans in Hokkaido
    .
It is related to pathogens known to cause Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Nairobi sheep disease .

Recently, in a study published in "Nature Communications", researchers from Hokkaido University's International Zoonosis Control Institute and Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases described the new virus
    .

The virus is named Yezo virus (YEZV), which is a new type of Neiro virus
    .

Researchers identified the virus in two patients in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan in 2019 and 2020, respectively
    .

The first case of YEZV infected with Yezo virus was a 41-year-old male with a history of hyperuricemia and hyperlipidemia, living in Sapporo, Hokkaido
    .

He was bitten by a tick while walking in the forest near Sapporo.
By the next day, he found the tick attached to his right abdomen and took it out.
He had a high fever of 39°C that lasted for 4 days, as well as mobility difficulties and legs.
    Hospitalized after the pain
    .

When the patient was admitted to the hospital, all examinations were negative except for acute fever, loss of appetite, and pain in both lower limbs
    .

The physical examination was normal, and there were small papules on the abdomen.
The doctor suspected that it was the site of a tick bite
    .

Laboratory tests showed leukopenia and lymphopenia.
The second case of Yezo virus infection was a 59-year-old healthy male living in Sapporo, Hokkaido with no obvious history of disease
    .

In mid-July 2020, he was walking on a mountain near Sapporo
    .

During this period, his calf was bitten by an unidentified arthropod
    .

Subsequently, he remained in a normal state of health until the 9th day, when he lost his appetite, and then started to have a fever on the 17th day
    .

I went to two different hospitals on the 3rd and 4th days after the fever, and they also showed progressive thrombocytopenia and persistent leukopenia
    .

Both patients have been discharged after treatment
    .

The researchers found the Yezo virus in their blood samples.
The virus was proven to be a member of the genus Naerovirus.
4 out of 15 Naeroviruses are known to cause human diseases.
One of the viruses is known to cause gram Rimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, with symptoms of muscle pain, diarrhea, and skin bleeding, which can lead to liver failure and death
    .

This new virus appears to be most closely related to the Sulina virus and Tamdy virus found in Romania and Uzbekistan, respectively
    .

Subsequently, the researchers analyzed blood samples from some other patients who had similar symptoms since 2014
    .

They said that since 2014, at least seven people in Japan have been infected with the new virus, but no one has died yet
    .

It is reported that the virus can cause a high fever of up to 39 degrees and cause thrombocytopenia and leukopenia
    .

In addition, some patients in Japan also showed signs of abnormal liver function
    .

The researchers also tried to find the source of the Yezo virus, and they found that Yezo virus RNA is present in the three main tick species across the northern islands of Japan
    .

Antibodies to the virus have also been found in deer and raccoons that inhabit the area
    .

Researchers believe that it is most important to detect this new virus in areas outside of Hokkaido
    .

The team has plans to track the potential distribution of the Yezo virus across Japan, including humans and animals
