Embedded in bone tissue are bone cells, which have dendritic protrusions called dendrites, which are very important for receiving information from other cells

In their study, the researchers found that the loss of the Sp7 gene in bone cells can cause severe defects in the dendrites of bone cells

"In this work, we demonstrate that the key role of transcription factors Sp7 and its target osteocrin orchestrate a gene regulatory network needed to promote connections between healthy bone cells," said senior author Mark Wine, MD, PhD, and an investigator Assistant Professor of Endocrinology Unit at MGH and Harvard Medical School
