A fifty-year-old man suddenly flares up vomiting and is taken to the emergency room

Complains of a 2-month history
of epigastric pain and foul-smelling diarrhea.
He drank half a pint of vodka a day for 15 years

Physical examination reveals epigastric tenderness

Laboratory tests, including serum lipase and liver function tests, are within the normal range

CT of the abdomen shows extensive calcification of the pancreas, with no evidence of pancreatic edema or peripancreatic fluid collection, and findings consistent
with chronic calcific pancreatitis.
Endoscopy shows gastric ulcer, treated with acid suppression

Chronic alcoholic pancreatitis is a common cause of
pancreatic calcifications.
Treatment of chronic pancreatitis usually includes pain management and correction
of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
The patient (condition) returns to stability; Pancreatic enzyme supplements were taken at discharge and enrolled in an alcoholism rehabilitation (abstinence) program
