Nestlé has announced that it is currently piloting a coffee refill system in Switzerland to reduce the use of single-use packaging
.
These coffee refill systems are installed in stores, and consumers bring reusable containers to choose from different types of Nescafé soluble coffees according to their taste preferences
.
Nestlé said the system offers consumers a new shopping experience without one-off packaging, yet flexibility and a wide range of products to choose from
.
In addition, consumers can digitally access product information typically printed on packaging, such as ingredients, nutritional value and shelf life
.
Nestlé recently partnered with technology start-up MIWA to trial a coffee refill system with three Nestlé stores in Rorschach, Aubert and Latour-de-Pelz, Switzerland
.
Over the next few months, the systems will be rolled out to more locations to further assess their effectiveness in reducing packaging waste along the supply chain
.
Hélène Lanctuit, Head of R&D Packaging at Nestlé, said: "Packaging plays a key role in protecting food safety during the shelf life of a product
.
“These refill systems are relatively new and use smart technology that allows us to keep our products safe while maintaining freshness and traceability,” he said
.
