Peripheral neuropathy is a common neurological disorder estimated to affect 6-13% of the general population and 1/3 of patients over the age of 80
.
Assessment of sensory function as part of a neurological examination is the basis for evaluation and monitoring of peripheral nerve disease
To improve test reliability, practitioners use standardized methods to measure patient sensory function, including timed vibration thresholds using a 128 Hz tuning fork and touch pressure thresholds using a standardized monofilament
Diagnostic Management Screening
Tactile corpuscles (MCs) are the primary pressure receptors in hairless skin (hands and feet)
.
In vivo reflection confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive and painless imaging technique that can quantitatively measure MC density
Tactile corpuscles (MCs) are the primary pressure receptors in hairless skin (hands and feet)
Recently, researchers established tactile corpuscles (MCs) that can be adjusted according to age, sex, and body size through in vivo reflection confocal microscopy (RCM), timing vibration sensory thresholds using a 128hz tuning fork, and touch pressure sensory thresholds using a normalized monofilament.
The researchers recruited a total of 77 prospective individuals, all of whom met the conditions of no symptoms or symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, and no exposure to neurotoxins, and achieved monofilament touch pressure sensory thresholds and non-dominance mediated by RCM by altering sensory function.
Timed vibratory sensory thresholds of the lower extremities for cross-sectional assessment of MC, adjusted for age, sex, body size (eg, height)
.
The 5th percentile of MC density and temporal vibration thresholds and the 95th percentile of MF contact pressure thresholds were chosen as standard cutoff points
- The study subjects ranged in age from 9 to 89 years old
.
Age and gender were evenly distributed
This study established an RCM assessment of multiple limb positions adjusted for age, sex, and body size, two easily applicable normal thresholds for measuring macrofiber sensory function, and macrofiber density
