It is generally believed that adult brain activity is governed by chemical and electrical conduction mechanisms

On August 12, 2022, Xiao Bailong's team from Tsinghua University published a research paper titled "Astrocytic Piezo1-mediated mechanotransduction determines adult neurogenesis and cognitive functions" online in Neuron, which demonstrated the exploration of mechanically gated Piezo1 channels in astrocytes It is expressed during the process and exploits its mechanosensitivity to mediate mechanically evoked Ca 2+ responses and ATP release, thereby establishing Piezo1-mediated mechanochemical transduction in astrocytes

Piezo1 deletion in astrocytes resulted in a significant reduction in hippocampal volume and brain weight, severely impaired (but rescued by ATP) adult neurogenesis in vivo, and abolished the ATP-dependent enhancement of neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation in vitro

Adult brain activity, such as hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive behavior, is generally thought to be dominated by chemical and electrical transduction mechanisms mediated by chemoreceptors, ligand-gated and voltage-gated ion channels, respectively
