    New Evidence Shows Cancer Isn't Hereditary Like Once Thought!

    While cancer is a genetic disease, genetic factors are only part of the problem, and researchers also need to consider environmental and metabolic factors, according to a review of research by a leading expert at the University of Alberta


    Nearly all theories about the causes of cancer that have emerged over the past few centuries can be grouped into three broad categories, said David Wishart, a professor in the departments of biological sciences and computer science


    Until now, the metabolic perspective has not been studied much, but it has sparked the interest of more scientists who are beginning to understand the role of the metabolome in cancer


    As cancer develops and spreads, the genome, exposer and metabolome work together in a feedback loop


    According to the data, hereditary cancers account for only 5 to 10 percent of all cancers, Wishart said


    "This is an important question to consider because it shows that cancer is not inevitable


    The metabolome is key to this process, as those cancer cells with genetic mutations are maintained by a cancer-specific metabolome


    "Cancer is inherited, but often the mutation itself is not enough," Wishart said


    From a multi-omics perspective, the genome, exposome and metabolome are all considered unanimously when considering cancer, showing promise in finding treatments and overcoming the limitations of focusing on just one of these factors


    For example, Wishart explained that researchers looking only at the genetic perspective are looking for ways to address specific mutations


    But when cancer is considered from a metabolic perspective, there are only four main types of metabolism, Wishart said


    "It really doesn't make a difference where the cancer is -- it's something you have to get rid of


    Wishart cautions that healthcare providers still need multiple cancer treatments, noting that a greater understanding of the metabolome and its role in cancer feedback loops is also critical for cancer prevention


    "If we understand the causes of cancer, then we can start to highlight the known causes, the life>


    "From a prevention standpoint, changing our metabolism through life>
