According to the British Renewable Energy Association (REA) and Western Power Distribution, new homes should be required to use modern power systems instead of the pre-World War II "single-phase" electrical standard
    .

New homes in the UK should be required to use a modern electricity system

The REA said new homes equipped with a "three-phase" power supply should become standard practice
for network operators and the construction industry.

They believe that doing so will contribute to greater adoption of innovative low-carbon technologies, such as home electric vehicle charging, the deployment of solar panels and the generation
    of renewable heat.

The current model in the UK is for homebuilders and network operators to run three-phase power within the main cable of a street, but only connect each house to one of the phases
    .

This is largely because regulations are pushing distribution network operators to install the cheapest available solutions, preventing them from installing slightly more expensive three-phase connections
    .

The three-phase power supply system allows loads from different equipment, from washing machines and lamps to sports electric vehicles and fast chargers, to be distributed in various phases
    .

Nina Skorupska, CEO of REA, said: "If we are serious about meeting our targets to reduce energy bills and meet our carbon targets and industrial strategic goals, we should ensure that they have adequate electrical connections
    .
Three-phase power in new homes could facilitate faster deployment of renewable heat systems, better use of rooftop solar power, and provide more options
    for charging electric vehicles.
