scientific report on September 5th reported a previously unknown new genus of late Cretaceous platypus. The discovery of new fossils in Japan will help to better understand the diversity of platypus in the Far East and the evolution of platypus in the Late Cretaceous (100.5 million to 66 million years ago).
platypus was a very successful species of dinosaur in the Late Cretaceous, and their fossils were found in North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Antarctica.
latest platypus was discovered in the sea sediments of the Hakobuchi formation in Hokkaido, Hokkaido, and named Kamuysaurus Japonicus. The authors note that the discovery of platypus in ocean-affected environments is rare, and the new findings will help researchers better understand the diversity of platypus dinosaurs in such environments.
72 million-year-old sample, about 8 meters long, came from a medium-sized, fully developed platypus. The authors report a unique set of features, including a small crucible on the skull and a short, forward-growing neural ratchet. Analysis of the sample showed that it was related to other platypus dragons in the Far East, such as China's Leiyang dragon and Russia's Kebelos dragon. (Source: Jin Nan, China Science Journal)
