New portable blood detectors are cheap and accurate

research shows that a cheap, portable blood detector is as accurate as expensivehospitaltesting equipment into detect diseases of love, syphilis and other infectiousdiseasesresearchers used a "chip lab" prototype, the size of a credit card, to test hundreds of patients in Rwanda, and found that it was nearly 100 percent accuratethey say the blood detector, known as "mChip," can address three major barriers to access to health care for people in poor areas, namely, difficulty obtaining tests, high costs, and waiting a long time to learn the results"Our idea is to give everyone around the world, regardless of situation, the opportunity to get tests, not to force them to go to the clinic for blood tests, but to wait a few days for the results to be known," said Samuel Sia, a Columbia University professor wholead mChip development"
the findings are published in the latest issue of the journal NatureMChip's production costs are estimated at $1 per dollar (about S$1.2), so testing costs will be cheaper than current laboratory tests
