In 2020, the seaweed genebank team proposed and established a method to construct a permanent F2 population based on the life history characteristics of wakame.

The seaweed genebank team used classical genetic methods and found that after meiosis, the hermaphrodite and parthenogenetic phenotypes of the gametophytes of wakame are heritable, revealing the sex-linked genetic phenomenon of the hermaphrodite phenotype (that is, it only appears in males).

Researchers use this genetic characteristic to propose and establish a method for constructing DH populations using parthenogenesis and hermaphroditism in Wakame.
