, Beijing, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- It is well known that drinking tea can refresh the brain, and the benefits of tea to the brain do more than that. A new study has found that regular tea drinkers have healthier brain structures later in life, helping to slow cognitive decline.
An international team of researchers led by the National University of Singapore recently published a paper in the American Journal of Aging, saying that the composition of tea can directly affect connections between brain regions, and regular tea drinking helps the brain resist age-induced structural changes.
team studied 36 people over the age of 60 and collected information about their physical, lifestyle, and mental health status between 2015 and 2018, as well as neuropsychological tests and MRI. By analyzing their cognitive performance and imaging results, the researchers found that people who drank tea at least four times a week for 25 years were more likely to have connections between brain regions than those who didn't.
, for example, roads are better planned, vehicles and pedestrians travel more efficiently, and when brain regions are better connected, the brain processes information more efficiently, the researchers explain.
team found in 2017 that drinking tea a day reduced the risk of cognitive decline in old age by 50 percent. This study further confirms this conclusion. The researchers say tea drinkers' brains can help slow cognitive decline by avoiding interference with ineffective connections.
team's next step is to study the relationship between the specific ingredients in tea and cognitive abilities and explore possible interventions to protect people's cognitive abilities in the aging process.
