New treatments for obesity and heart disease

Yoshimoto worked with Eunhee Chung, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at UTSA's College of Health, Community and Policy, to test the new drug

"I've always dreamed of helping my family members who are affected by obesity, heart disease and other diseases

"As an exercise physiologist, I firmly believe that exercise is the best medicine against non-communicable diseases," Chung added

UTSA's drug has the potential to stop the activity of P450 8B1, an enzyme that produces bile acid in the body

The team's study involved treating mice with inhibitor drugs for seven days

Yoshimoto and Chung's work represents UTSA's mission to develop solutions to complex challenges to improve the health and well-being of society

"These results suggest that our research in synthetic chemistry can make a significant contribution to societal well-being by treating obesity and heart disease," Yoshimoto said
