    Germany's Energy Transition Program has set a goal
    of meeting 80% of the country's annual electricity demand with renewable energy by 2050.
    This requires German transmission service operators (TSOs), such as Amprion, to upgrade their high-voltage (HV) power transmission networks to transmit electricity generated by wind farms in the north over long distances to major consumption areas
    in the south.

    Neckers played a role in this project by providing cables that enabled Amprion to place its overhead lines in an underground environment
    on route-sensitive sections.

    Amprion operates a transmission network system of around 11,000 kilometers that can transmit electricity
    to more than 29 million people from Lower Saxony to the Alps.
    While most of its high-voltage lines include overhead lines, in some environmentally sensitive areas, Amprion is taking the route underground
    .

    Nexans is involved in Amprion's pilot part of the underground engineering project in Reisfield and is currently supplying 31.
    8 km of 400 kV underground high-voltage cable
    for a major project on the route between Wesel and Meppen.

    The 5.
    2 km Legden route consists of 2.
    1 km of tunnels and 3.
    1 km of
    pipelines.
    Nexans is supplying a cable for a double circuit with a copper cross-section of 2500 mm2
    .
    The cable sections installed in the tunnel will be sheathed halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR), and Nexans will also provide steel support structures
    .

    According to the plan, Nexans will be responsible for production and delivery at the plant in Charleroi, Belgium, while the steel support structure will be subcontracted to a specialist company
    .
    Delivery of the cable is scheduled for July 2022 and installation is completed
    in 2023.
