    S 4 N 4 is an orange-yellow solid with a melting point of 178.
    2°C.
    It is stable in the air and is a raw material for the preparation of other nitrogen and sulfur compounds
    .


    The molecular structure of S 4 N 4 is shown in Figure 12-5(a).


    Explosive reaction occurs when S 4 N 4 is hit or heated rapidly:

    S 4 N 4 =4S+2N 2

    S 4 N 4 is insoluble in water and does not hydrolyze
    .


    However, it will hydrolyze to produce thiosulfate , trisulfate and ammonia in case of dilute strong alkali solution

    2S 4 N 4 +6NaOH+9H 2 O=Na 2 S 2 O 3 +2Na 2 S 3 O 6 +8NH 3

    S 4 N 4 is hydrolyzed to produce thiosulfate, sulfite and ammonia when it meets strong alkali solution :

    S 4 N 4 +6NaOH+3H 2 O=Na 2 S 2 O 3 +2Na 2 SO 3 +4NH 3

    S 2 N 2 is a colorless crystal at room temperature, insoluble in water, but soluble in many organic solvents
    .


    The S 2 N 2 molecule has a planar quadrilateral ring structure, as shown in Figure 12-5(b)


    (SN) n is called polysulfur nitride or polythiazolyl, bronze color, metallic luster and low temperature superconductivity
    .


    (SN)n is more stable than S 2 N 2 , and no explosive decomposition reaction occurs when the temperature is below 240℃


    S 4 N 2 is a red crystal, which melts into a deep red liquid at 25°C, and decomposes violently when the temperature reaches 100°C
    .


    The S 4 N 2 molecule has a boat configuration, as shown in Figure 12-5(c)
