    Northern Hemisphere citrus production expected to fall by 13% in the 2022/23 season

    According to the World Citrus Organization (WCO) recently released its forecast for citrus production in the Northern Hemisphere for the 2022/23 season, citrus production in the Northern Hemisphere is expected to fall by 13% to 25,958,275 tonnes
    this season due to adverse weather.
     
    The report is based on data from trade associations in Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, and the United States, mainly from USDA reports
    on Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.
     
    Summing up the forecast during the Global Citrus Congress, WCO Secretary-General Philippe Binard said, "Market information from major citrus producing countries in the Northern Hemisphere indicates that citrus production in the 2022/23 season is expected to decline to 25,958,275 tonnes, down 13% from the previous season"

    Eric Imbert from the WCO Technical Secretariat (CIRAD) said this season's harvest was the lowest in the past few due to adverse weather conditions in major exporting countries

    Despite the decline in production in the Northern Hemisphere, the citrus market continues to remain buoyant, with citrus remaining one of
    the leading fruits in the global market.
     
    Specifically, the production of oranges is expected to fall by 11.

    Similar declines are expected in the production of other citrus varieties: grapefruit (down 16.

    32% to 7,176,116 tonnes and lemons (down 15.

    In the case of the European Union, citrus production in Spain and Italy is expected to decline by 15.

    On the southern edge of the Mediterranean, citrus production is also expected to decline, with Morocco down 33%, Turkey down 27.
