    According to a new study, middle-aged and elderly people who eat at least 3 servings of whole grains a day have smaller increases in waist circumference, blood pressure and blood sugar compared to those who eat less than half a serving of whole grains a day


    The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition on July 13, was completed by researchers at the Human Nutrition and Aging Research Center (HNRCA) of the United States Department of Agriculture, Jean Mayer, Tufts University, and investigated the intake of whole grains and refined grains.


    Researchers used data from the offspring of the Framingham Heart Study, which began in the 1970s to assess long-term risk factors for heart disease, to study the health effects of consumption of whole grains and refined grains (median 18 years)


    To measure the daily grain intake, the researchers used a diet questionnaire.


    The results showed that participants with low intake of whole grains increased their waist circumference by an average of 1 inch, while those with more intake increased by about 1/2 inch.


    The researchers also studied the relationship between the intake of four refined grains and five risk factors every four years, ranging from less than two servings per day to more than four servings
