South African power company Eskom implemented a planned blackout
on Wednesday as Unit 1 of South Africa's Koeberg nuclear power plant shut down due to safety concerns.

The Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant, the only nuclear power plant in Africa, located near Cape Town, South Africa's legislative capital, was shut down for maintenance due to a leak in a steam generator, and Unit 1 was shut down for maintenance
due to safety reasons.

Eskom said that the shutdown of nuclear power plants for maintenance poses no risk to the power station, personnel or the environment, and that blackouts are needed to restore and preserve emergency power reserves
.

The company added that the outage was from 2000 GMT to 0300 GMT and resumed
again on Thursday local time.

In addition, the Koeberg nuclear power plant is expected to be put back into operation
in May this year.
