    Japan's NEC Corporation announced today that Okinawa Mobile Phone has awarded NEC a contract to design, supply, install, test and implement an undersea cable system
    connecting Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures in Japan.

    According to reports, the cable system is connected to Nago City in Okinawa Prefecture and Nichi City in Kagoshima Prefecture, with a total length of about 760 kilometers, a maximum depth of about 1200 meters, and a maximum design transmission capacity of 80 Tbps
    per second.

    NEC said that by connecting Okinawa and Kagoshima by a different route from the existing cable, the cable can protect the backup line
    in the event of a large-scale disaster or other emergency.
    In addition, the cable system will meet the communication needs between Okinawa, Kyushu and Honshu regions in Japan, and is expected to continue to grow in the future due to
    the construction of Okinawa data centers and the launch of 5G services.

    OCC, a subsidiary of NEC, manufactures the required submarine cables, and it is the only company
    in Japan that can manufacture submarine cables that can withstand water pressure from a depth of 8,000 meters.

    It is reported that the submarine cable system is scheduled to start operation
    in April 2020.
