Recently, the Oman Electricity Regulatory Authority announced that it has signed a contract with British company PassivSystems to install rooftop solar formwork
on more than 30% of Omani roofs.
The first phase of the project has already begun, with the pilot setting to install solar formwork in 1,000-3,000 homes before expanding the program to over 250,000 properties
.
It is estimated that 30% of Oman's rooftop projects can generate more than 1 GW of power generation capacity
.
The government plans to adopt a "subsidized ownership model" that provides households with the lowest cost solar formwork, while providing long-term incentives for users who install rooftop solar formwork
.
Private investors are expected to finance
the solar project.
PassivSystems notes that with the spread of air conditioning in Omani homes, daytime electricity demand typically peaks when solar power can make the greatest contribution to meeting that demand
.
As such, this rooftop solar project will help reduce bills for consumers as well as Oman's dependence
on natural gas as fuel.
