Panama's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MIDA) said recently that although the new crown outbreak continues to develop, but because of government support for domestic rice production, Panama's 2020-2021 farming period of rice cultivation area and production both increased.
, Panama's Star newspaper reported on January 14th that 84,459 hectares of rice will be grown in the country between 2020 and 2021, an increase of 11,160 hectares over the same period last year, according to data released recently by panama's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
so far, 69,077 hectares of rice have been harvested, accounting for 82 per cent of the total area under cultivation, and the total output has now reached 7.19 million metric tons (about 100 kg) with an average yield of 104 centicres per hectare.
with an average yield of 104 metric meters per hectare of rice during the farming period from 2019 to 2020, and an increase in total planting area, total yields are also expected to increase year-on-year after the end of the harvest process.
data show that Panama's largest rice-producing province is Chiriquí, with an area of 18,829 hectares, accounting for 22.3 per cent of the country's total rice cultivation, followed by the province of Panamá Este, with 15,859 hectares, or 18.8 per cent.
, the country's agriculture and livestock development minister. Augusto Valderrama, chief economics minister, stressed that rice growers had gained confidence and rice production had increased as the government prioritized the acquisition of domestically produced rice rather than importing it from abroad.
