Paraguay's total exports of pork and pork products rose 15.2 per cent year-on-year in 2020, but total exports fell 10.4 per cent year-on-year, according to a report by Paraguay's National Meat Quality and Animal Health Administration .
Paraguay's total exports of pork and pork products in 2020 were 5,462 tons, up 15.2% year-on-year, and total exports were $863.9 million, down 10.4% year-on-year, mainly due to lower international prices for pork and the inability to export pork to Russia, the largest buyer of Paraguayan pork in 2019, the Paraguayan national newspaper reported on January 16.
In terms of export markets, Georgia was Paraguay's primary export market for pork last year, accounting for 65 per cent of Paraguay's total pork exports, followed by Azerbaijan with 9 per cent, followed by the United Arab Emirates (5 per cent) and Brazil (4 per cent) in third and fourth place, and Albania, Angola, Gabon, Mozambique, Viet Nam and Moldova each accounting for 1 per cent of total exports.
It is understood that at the end of last year, Paraguay's meat processing plant received an export authorization from the Uruguayan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries to export bone-defying pork to the Uruguayan market, and Moiséstiago Santiago Bertoni, Minister of the Paraguayan Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), said recently that the opening of the Uruguayan market was an important opportunity for Paraguay's pig industry, representing an export potential of about 40,000 tons.
