some metals are oxidized by anodes or treated chemically (e.g. in response to strong oxidants) and change from a lively state to an inactive state (passivation state), which is called passivation. After the metal is passivated, its surface forms a solid, tight oxide protective film that prevents the internal metal from continuing to corrode. Metals such as aluminum, iron, chromium and nickel are placed in thick sulfuric acid and nitric acid at room temperature, and passivation occurs. Therefore, thick nitric acid can be shipped in aluminum containers and enriched sulfuric acid can be stored in containers made of iron or aluminum.
