Recently, scientists in China, the United States and Japan have discovered a new structure as a carbon - pentagonal graphene
.
The two-dimensional structure of pentagonal graphene with carbon five-membered ring as the structural basis is expected to become a new carbon material, and its performance may surpass that of conductor graphene in some aspects, and it has a wide range of application prospects
in electronics, biomedicine and nanotechnology.
Molecular dynamics simulation suggests that pentagonal graphene can withstand high temperature of 727 °C and has ultra-high mechanical strength
comparable to graphene.
Most of the previously discovered carbon materials are composed of carbon six-membered rings as the main structural primitives, and carbon materials composed only of carbon-five-membered rings as structural primitives have not been found, while the new materials are completely two-dimensional pentagonal carbon allotropes
.
This discovery has enriched the understanding of
carbon structure.
At present, this new carbon allotrope pentagonal graphene has been included
in Wikipedia.
