The effect of graphene oxide content on graphene oxide/water-based polyurethane nanocoated properties was studied.
graphene oxide (GO) is a good nanofiller for water-based coatings because of its excellent physical and mechanical properties, good dispersion in water and low cost relative to graphene. The scientists reported the performance of a single-group water-based polyurethane (WPU) nano-coat with four different GO contents (0.4% to 2.0% by mass)
.
results show that GO sheets are well dispersed in the WPU and have good adhesion. At higher mass loads (1.2% or 2%in mass), GO increased the mold and yield strength of the WPU by 300% and 200%, increased thermal conductivity by 38%, and reduced combustion and heat release (combustible by 43% and oxygen penetration by up to 7x).
GO as a viable nanofiller for WPU coatings
the presence of GO increases the absorption of water vapor at high humidity. GO/WPU nano-coatings with a mass content of 2% contain almost twice as much water under 90% RH as unfilled WPU. Overall, in addition to absorbing water at very high humidity (> 70%RH), observed improvements in physical and mechanical properties and ease of processing indicate that GO is a viable nanofiller for WPU coatings.
the findings have been published in the Journal of Coating Technology and Research Volume 17 (2020).
