Polish climate and environmentalists have asked Germany to reconsider its decision
to phase out nuclear power in 2011.
On December 18, activists from the FOTA4Climate initiative presented an open letter
signed jointly by Polish scientists, intellectuals, activists and citizens to the Embassy in Warsaw, Germany.
They wrote in the open letter that the current climate emergency requires nuclear power plants in Germany and other countries to continue operating "until effective, state-of-the-art technologies have been implemented to store electricity generated from renewable sources.

"Abandoning low-carbon nuclear power until the burning of hard coal and lignite is completely ended will lead to technical and process problems that will be difficult to overcome in the short term, leading to the need to continue using other fossil fuels, mainly natural gas
.

In December 2019, FOTA4Climate and its supporters from Germany protested the closure of the Philipsburg nuclear power plant
, which was then fully operational.
"We are aware of the ongoing discussion about the place of nuclear energy in long-term sustainable energy models and believe it still needs to be supplemented by complete scientific data, but abandoning low-carbon nuclear power will be difficult to overcome in the short term until coal and lignite burning is completely eliminated, so natural gas comes first
among other fossil fuels," the protesters argued.
This, in turn, does not achieve the desired results
in the form of effective and rapid decarbonization.

They cite the findings of scientists from around the world within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who write, "Only by rapidly and effectively eliminating the burning of fossil fuels will there be a chance of keeping Earth's atmospheric temperature rise below 1.
