Portugal's National Communications Authority (ANACOM) highlighted the need to create a new submarine cable system between mainland Portugal and Madeira and the Azores, as the existing Columbus III and Atlantis-2 cables have a useful life of 2024-25 years

The Columbus III submarine cable system was commissioned in 1999 to connect Portugal and the United States, and was upgraded in 2009 to a speed of 320 Gbit/s via Spain and Italy, with a total length of 9,900 km

The Atlantis-2 submarine cable system was commissioned in 2000 and connects Argentina, Brazil, Senegal, Cape Verde, the Canary Islands and Portugal, and is the first transoceanic submarine cable system to connect Latin America and the African continent, with a total length of 12,000 kilometers and a current rate of 160 Gbit/s

The regulator ANACOM said the Portuguese state must define a strategic direction, involving the central government and two regional governments, to mobilize EU funds to build the submarine cable system and promote regional internet connectivity
