German grid companies TenneT Holding BV and TransnetBW GmbH have awarded underground cable supply contracts for Germany's SuedLink wind power project worth a total of 2 billion euros ($2.
    26 billion).

Two transmission system operators (TSOs) said they have decided to use plastic-insulated underground DC cables
with a voltage of 525 kV in the project.
The leading European cable manufacturer Nktor Cable and the Prysmann subsidiary have received these cable orders
    .

Under the contract, NKT GmbH&Co KG, part of the NKT Group, will deliver and install the XLPE high-voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore cable system for a total contract price of more than EUR 1 billion and a line length of approximately 750 km
    .
Production is expected to begin in early 2022 at its plants in Cologne, Germany, and Karlskrona
    , Sweden.

Prysmian PowerLink Srl will also design, manufacture, supply, lay, combine, test and commission a 2 GW underground cable system from northern Germany to southern Germany as part of
an order worth more than €800 million.
The 700-kilometre transmission line will connect Wilster in Schleswig-Holstein to the northwest
    of Hamburg.

The entire €10 billion SuedLink will transport wind power from northern Germany to southern Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg
    .
The two grid operators operate separately, with TenneT responsible for the north and TransnetBW responsible for the southern
    part of the cable connection.

According to the plan, the entire project should be completed
    in 2026.
