Originally published as Pumpkins and sons can lower blood pressure
A new study published at the American Heart Association's 2019 Annual Conference on Hypertension found that adding pumpkins and pumpkin seeds to your diet can help lower blood pressure levels.
Soweto Thomas, a biomedical researcher at Tuskegee University in the United States, and his team used rats to study the health benefits of pumpkin flesh and pumpkin seeds. The researchers frozen and dried pumpkin fruit and pumpkin seeds into powder, which was added to the rat's food. Rats were randomly grouped: control group rats were fed regular food, pumpkin fruit and pumpkin subgroup rats were fed pumpkin flesh or pumpkin seeds (both about 4% of total food calories). The rats began feeding at 6 weeks of age and lasted for 8 weeks, and the researchers measured the rats' blood pressure and heart muscle function. The results showed that the blood pressure of the pumpkin fruit group and the pumpkin subgroup mice decreased by 27% and 23%, respectively, compared with the control group, and the heart muscle function of the latter also improved significantly.
, a researcher, says researchers have been exploring the nutritional value of pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil for nearly 20 years. Pumpkin oil can significantly reduce systolic pressure in rats, a study has found. New research further suggests that pumpkin flesh and seeds are also beneficial in lowering blood pressure. Pumpkins are rich in beta carotene, phenolic substances, potassium and other compounds that help lower blood pressure and should be included in the diet, both to eat fruit and not to discard, but pay attention to the amount, not more than a small amount per day.
