    Real model of mouse hippocampus reveals new mechanism of pattern separation

    There are 500,000 neurons in a model

    In previous studies, Jonas and his team measured the key parameters of synapses, neuronal connections, and connection rules that are necessary to understand information processing in the hippocampal networks of mice and rats


    Suppress separation mode

    Using this computer model, Jonas tested different hypotheses about how pattern separation works


    Historically, based on data from the cerebellum, neuroscientists believe that pattern separation is based on expansion: the pattern is projected from fewer neurons to a large number of neurons in the next layer of processing


    "Obviously, expansion cannot be the only mechanism of the hippocampus," Jonas said


    The new data also explained a result of a previous study, which puzzled Jonas
