The continuous emergence of new coronavirus mutant strains and the widespread prevalence in many countries and regions in the world have made whether the new crown vaccine can protect these virus strains has become an issue of continuous concern

The results of the study showed that two weeks after inoculation with two doses of mRNA-1273, the effectiveness of protection against Alpha infection was 100%, the effectiveness of protection against Beta infection was 96.

Qatar began mass vaccination in late February this year.

The researchers used a research method called test-negative case-control to analyze the vaccination and infection status of more than 50,000 people

The analysis results showed that for the Alpha mutant strain, the effect of preventing viral infection was limited within two weeks after the first dose of vaccine, but then it increased rapidly, reaching 94.

For Beta mutant strains, the effect of preventing viral infections is similar to that of Alpha.

For serious, critical and fatal diseases caused by any new coronavirus infection, the effectiveness of the vaccine reached 92.

The researchers also used a method called cohort study design to evaluate the protective efficacy of mRNA-1273

The researchers pointed out in the discussion section of the paper that the analysis results show that whether it is against Alpha or Beta mutant strains, mRNA-1273 shows a high degree of protection and can prevent hospitalization and death caused by COVID-19
