Introduction: On September 19-23, 2022, the international conference in the field of endocrinology "2022 European Association for Diabetes Research Annual Conference" was held
in Stockholm, Sweden in the form of "online + offline".
At the meeting, some scholars shared a research report
entitled "The relationship between plant-based diet index and obesity and metabolic diseases in the Chinese population".
After 10 years of follow-up, adhering to the "plant-based diet" has benefited a lot
Chinese food culture has been rich in plant-based food elements
since ancient times.
The Plant-Based Diet Index is often used to assess diet quality, and a high Plant-Based Diet Index can bring many benefits, but whether there is a correlation between the Plant-Based Diet Index and obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes is currently under-data-based
.
The data from the study are from the China Nutrition and Health Survey
.
A total of 11,580 people participated in the survey between 2004 and 2006, and were followed up until 2009 or 2015, with a follow-up rate of 73.
4%.
The subjects recorded 3 24-hour dietary intakes, and then calculated the overall plant-based diet indice (PDI) and healthy plant-based diet indice (hPDI)
through the Chinese food ingredient specification.
The study endpoints were overweight/obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes, and the hazard ratio (HR) and dose-response relationship
were assessed using the Cox proportional risk model and the restriction three-spline.
After an average of more than 10 years of follow-up, it was found that the findings were analyzed as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
In people aged <55 years, there was a significant negative association
between PDI/hPDI ratio and overweight/obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.
Summary of this article
For Chinese, especially under the age of 55, adhering to a plant-based diet can help reduce the risk
of obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
Further understanding of the correlation between plant-based diets and chronic diseases will also be needed in the future, which will help develop dietary strategies
to prevent diabetes, high blood pressure and related chronic diseases.
