Digital watermarks promise to change the way packaging waste is sorted

With the support of the European Brands Association, 85 companies and organisations from the packaging value chain have joined forces to achieve the ambitious goal of assessing whether innovative digital technologies can enable better assortment and higher quality packaging in the EU recycling rate, creating a true circular economy

    .

One of the most pressing challenges in advancing a circular economy for packaging is to improve the sorting of post-consumer waste by accurately identifying packaging for more efficient, higher-quality recycling

    .

A digital watermark is an imperceptible code the size of a postage stamp that covers the surface of consumer packaging

    .

After the post-consumer packaging enters the waste sorting facility, standard high-resolution cameras on the sorting line detect and decode the digital watermark

    .

Within the R-Cycle Consortium, Reifenhäuser is currently developing a digital standard that provides seamless documentation of all recycling-related packaging characteristics based on existing traceability technologies

    .

Bernd Reifenhäuser, CEO of the Reifenhäuser Group, explained: “Building a true circular economy for plastic packaging is one of the main challenges for our industry

    .

    Dr.
Benedikt Brenken, head of the R-Cycle programme, added: "With R-Cycle, we can make a valuable contribution to digital watermarking (HolyGrail 2.

    .

"Innovation, sustainability and digitalisation are the three key elements to achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal, which aims to achieve a clean, circular and climate-neutral economy," AIM Director-General Michelle Gibbons outlined
    .

He said it was great to see enthusiasm across the industry, bringing together expertise across the packaging value chain from brand owners, retailers to processors, EPR schemes, waste management systems, recyclers and more
    .
"Cooperation is the way forward to achieve the EU's circular economy goals,

    " said Michel Gibbons
