Image: CSHL researchers have found that treating mice with a drug candidate that inhibits a protein called PTP1B prevents deadly lung inflammation
    in mice.
What is seen here are 3D images of mouse lungs (left) and untreated (right) PTP1B inhibitor candidates
    .
This drug candidate can prevent fatal lung damage caused by the overactivity of immune cells called neutrophils (as shown in cyan in the figure
    ).

Neutrophils are the largest number of white blood cells and are the body's first line of defense
    against infection.

Caryl Boies, Professor Caryl Boies, and his team at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), have identified a drug candidate that can prevent deadly lung inflammation
in mice by inhibiting a protein called PTP1B.

"When you think about COVID-19, acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome are the deadly aspects
    of this disease," Tonks said.

Dongyan Song, a graduate student at Tonks, investigated whether the use of PTP1B inhibitor candidates could inhibit the fatal consequences
    of neutrophil overactivity in mice.

The researchers took advantage of a natural process called neutrophil senescence, which the body uses to control the lifespan
    of immune cells.

    The project is part of
    CSHL's COVID-19 related research project.

Tonks' lab studies signal transduction, a process that controls how cells respond
    to signals from the environment.
