According to the latest report by EnAppSys, a British power analysis company, renewable electricity is expected to surpass fossil fuels as the UK's main source of electricity generation by 2020
    .

EnAppSys released its annual market review and forecast earlier this month, which outlines electricity data from the UK electricity sector (excluding Northern Ireland)
    for 2018.
Coal and gas in 2018?? In total, gas power stations generated 130.
9 terawatt hours (TWh), while renewables generated 95.
    9 terawatt hours
    in 2018.

Electricity generation in the UK's renewable energy sector also increased by 12.
    7 TWh (15.
2%) in 2018, with subsequent impact on conventional generation levels falling by 6.
    7%
    from 140.
    3 TWh in 2017.

EnAppSys believes that with the further increase in the renewable energy sector, the level of fossil fuel power generation will continue to decrease, EnAppSys predicts that renewable energy generation will reach 121.
3 terawatt hours by 2020, while fossil fuel power generation will fall to 105.
    6 terawatt hours
    .

"It is clear that renewables will generate most of the electricity in the coming years and wind will play a leading role," Luke Clark, head of external affairs at RenewableUK, said
    by email.

"Renewables generated a third of the UK's electricity last year, half of which came from wind power
    .
Looking back, 2017 was the first year that low-carbon sources (renewables and nuclear) produced more UK electricity than fossil fuels, providing 50.
    1% of its electricity
    .
This year, work is underway on offshore wind projects, which will add 6.
1GW upon completion to the current offshore wind capacity of 7.
    9GW
    .
By 2030, we have the potential to reach 30GW of offshore wind, which will generate a third of the UK's electricity demand
    .
Our energy mix is changing rapidly and getting cleaner every year
    .

Luke Clark also explains, "It is also important to recognise that energy storage is growing rapidly in the UK, with almost 400 projects in operation (3.
    3GW) or underway (another 5.
    4GW).

In addition to this, we are also seeing greater energy efficiency
    in homes, offices and factories.
Crucially, we also see flexibility introduced into the system and new opportunities
    presented.

The increase in renewable energy generation in 2018 was largely due to higher levels of wind energy, as a large number of offshore wind farms were operational or fully operational
    during the year.
The cost of offshore wind is also falling and will drive further development and adoption
    .
As a result, wind energy will become the main source of renewable energy generation, accounting for 55%.
