According to data from the Portuguese electricity company Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN), renewable energy plants generate enough electricity to meet 59% of Portugal's electricity demand
between January 2021 and October 2021.
Hydropower and wind power contributed the most, accounting for 25% and 24%
of national demand, respectively.
Biomass energy is a close second, accounting for 6%, and solar photovoltaic (PV) is 4%.
According to REN, non-renewable electricity accounts for 31%, of which natural gas accounts for 29% and coal for 2%.
Energy imports meet the remaining 10%
of domestic consumption.
In October alone, renewable energy generation provided 44% of domestic consumption

Non-renewable resources and imports accounted for the remaining 34 per cent and 22 per cent

The utility pointed out that so far this year the total electricity consumption in Portugal has increased by 1.
