The Institute of Microbiology, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with a number of research teams from Denmark, Belgium and China, has made important progress in the study of the long-distance electron transport network of microorganisms in the water environment.

Some microorganisms in nature can carry out long-distance electron transfer and inter-species electron transfer by synthesizing nanowires, environmental media outside the cell and other microorganisms.

Researchers have discovered that a long linear gram-positive bacterium Lysinibacillus varians GY32 isolated from e-waste-polluted river sediments can produce electricity in a bioelectrochemical system constructed using culture fluid or sediment.

Conductivity test found that the cell network formed by the aggregation of strain GY32 has good conductive properties.

This study discovered for the first time that Gram-positive bacteria form a long-distance electron transport network through nanowires, which provides an important supplement for a comprehensive understanding of the long-distance electron transport network of microorganisms in the natural environment.
