Acyclic retinid, an artificial compound derived from vitamin A, has been previously found to prevent the recurrence of HCC Recently, a study published in PNAS found that acyclic retinid can target a class of cancer stem cells and prevent them from producing new tumors The team first investigated the transcriptome of cells exposed to acyclic retinid and found that compared with untreated cells in the control group, the expression of MYCN (a gene often expressed in tumors and related to poor prognosis) in cells exposed to acyclic retinid was lower Further experiments showed that the decrease of MYCN expression would lead to the decrease of cell cycle, cell proliferation and co lony formation, and the increase of cell death, which means that the effect of acylic retinid on MYCN slows down the growth of tumor The team began to investigate the role of a particular cell The cell, called cancer stem cells, can survive chemotherapy or other therapies and then differentiate into new cancer cells, leading to cancer recurrence The results show that the high ex pression of MYCN is indeed related to the expression of various markers related to cancer stem cells The scientists also found that when exposed to acyclic retinid, a specific group of EpCAM positive cancer stem cells were selectively depleted in a dose-dependent manner
