Hitachi Europe Ltd.
, Mitsubishi Motors and French energy giant Engie have launched a project in the Netherlands to study the potential
of electric vehicles for use as energy storage in office buildings.
Research project on the potential of electric vehicles as energy storage in buildings was launched
As part of the project, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) chargers have been connected
to Engie's office building in Zaandam.
Chargers supplied by Hitachi allow bidirectional charging
between EV batteries and buildings or grids.
It is connected to the building's energy supply, and when the building produces more solar energy than it needs, the rest is stored in the car's
battery.
The stored energy can be discharged back to the grid
when needed.
Hans Boot, COO of Services at Engie Netherlands, said: "This charger goes beyond smart charging as we know it and is basically the first true smart grid charger
.
”
Mitsubishi Motors offered its Outlander PHEV SUV to the project as an energy storage vehicle
.
In the next phase of the project, partners will examine how electric vehicles, renewable energy and building energy management systems can work together to make buildings more energy efficient
.
According to the announcement, vehicle-to-building (V2B) technology can play a key role
in reducing carbon emissions globally.
