Researchers achieve rapid detection of mild bacteriophages |
Guo Yunxue, an associate researcher at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has established a novel detection method for mild bacteriophages
.
The related research was published online in "Environmental Microbiology Report", the core biology journal of the American Society for Microbiology on July 10
Bacteriophages are viruses that feed on bacteria.
They can be found wherever there are bacteria
.
Bacteriophages are the enemy of microbial laboratories and bacterial industrial fermentation plants.
Since mild phages can hide in the host bacteria, the conventional "dual-plate detection" takes a long time, has low throughput and is not highly sensitive
.
The basis of the new method established by Guo Yunxue et al.
The method can be used for large-scale detection of whether commonly used strains and laboratory model strains in industrial fermentation are contaminated by mild bacteriophages, and for detecting whether the bacterial host has newly obtained mild bacteriophages, and has good scientific and industrial application prospects
.
