Researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) have developed an anti-ice coating that performs better than the best de-icing products on the market today.
The team, led by Arun Kota, an associate professor at the university's School of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, has developed an environmentally friendly anti-ice coating that prevents cars, ships, aircraft and even transmission lines from freezing and is durable and inexpensive.
The Journal of Material Chemistry states that the coating is a soft collage coating made of polydyl methylsiloxane (PDMS), a silicone polymer gel that has been widely used in the industrial sector. Before the experiment, the researchers had carried out an in-depth analysis of the adhesion of ice.
high-performance
de-icing coating performance measurement is called ice adhesion strength -- the shear stress necessary to remove ice from an object's surface -- measured in kPa. The Kota team developed a coating with an ice adhesion strength of 5kPa, while the soft coating on the market has an ice adhesion strength of 40kPa (the lower the performance, the higher the performance). Other types of de-icing coatings made of hard materials, such as Teflon, have an ice adhesion strength of 100kPa.
, what about the ice-removing material that was sprayed on the plane before the frozen plane took off? This spray is a liquid ice-free substance, including glycol or propylene glycol, which works well. The more common icing technique today is spraying salt or glycol. According to the EPA, more than 20 million gallons of de-icing chemicals are used by the aviation industry alone each year. But these liquid de-icing substances penetrate groundwater and have an environmental impact, and even so, they are reused every year.
de-icing agent Vs anti-ice
Kota points out that de-icing coatings are not the same as anti-ice coatings. Anti-ice coatings slow the formation of ice, while de-icing coatings make it easy to remove ice that has formed and adhered to the surface at once.
CSU University's anti-ice coating is a high-performance and environmentally friendly anti-ice solution that replaces toxic liquid de-icing and prevents ice from sticking to the windshield, a protective coating that lasts longer.
