Regulatory effects of benzoxazine compounds in different types of soil on the growth of Spodoptera frugiperda

This result was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States
    .

Plant roots will continuously secrete primary and secondary metabolites into the soil.

Plant roots will continuously secrete primary and secondary metabolites into the soil.

Spodoptera frugiperda is an important pest in the growth process of corn, which leads to a sharp decline in corn yield by feeding on leaves
    .

However, natural selection, in order to better resist the infestation of pests, the secondary metabolites of benzoxazine compounds are synthesized in the corn body, which are used as "natural pesticides" to eliminate pests

Benzoxazine compounds are not only synthesized in leaves and roots, but also released into the soil in the form of root exudates
    .

To this end, Xu Jianming’s team collected two types of soil (artificial soil and iron-rich soil) at eight different locations in Yixing, Jiangsu, to further study whether soil types would affect the resistance of benzoxazine compounds to Spodoptera frugiperda

Xu Jianming’s team found that the benzoxazine compounds in the roots would react with the soil and increase the iron content in the leaves of plants
    .

As we all know, iron ion is an essential nutrient element for biological growth and plays an important role in the synthesis of plant chlorophyll

"We found that, at the root of the release benzoxazine compound will be free of iron transport into the blade"
    .

Xu Jianming introduced that through experiments on the quantitative relationship of iron, it was found that iron ions are the root cause of soil differences

Iron ions can enhance photosynthesis, which is conducive to the increase of corn yield
    .

The researchers found that, due to the impact of this nutrient iron ions, the original natural pesticides "ineffective"

The research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's innovative research group project
