Telomere shortening is considered the "golden standard" in aging biology, and previous studies have often explored the possibility of delaying aging through methods including dietary improvements, endurance training, and medication.A recent study published in Aging by researchers at Tel Aviv University and Shamir Medical Center in Israel, entitled Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases telomere length and analysis immunosenscence in isolated blood cells: a prospective trial, the desire to break the spell of aging and achieve a longevity may require only a change of inhaled oxygen.The study was carried out as part of a comprehensive Israeli research programme that treats aging as a reversible condition. In an aging population, daily hyperbaric oxygen therapy can stop cells from aging and reverse the aging process, the report said, specifically by increasing the telomere length of individual nuclear cells (PBMC) in participants by more than 20 percent and decreasing the number of senescing cells by 10-37 percent.Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) refers to a treatment in which a patient is treated with intermittent or continuous inhalation of 85% to 99% oxygen at high pressure (above normal pressure). Previous studies have shown that HBOT induces the expression of hypoxia-induced factors (HIF), endovascular endostropheric growth factors (VEGF) and sirtuin (deacetylase), stem cell proliferation, mitochondrial biogenetics, angiogenesty and neurogenesia.However, there is still a gap regarding the effect of HBOT on aging. So the researchers hope to explore whether HBOT can slow, stop or even reverse the natural aging process at cellular levels.The study was conducted at Israel's Shamir Medical Center, in which 35 elderly healthy participants over the age of 64 received 60 hyperbaric oxygen treatments over 90 days, breathing 100% of the dense oxygen under a mask for 90 minutes each time under a specific environment and taking a 5 minute break for every 20 minutes of oxygen absorption.Each participant provided blood samples before, during, at the end of treatment, and over a period of time after a series of treatments for researchers to analyze the various types of immune cells in the blood and their changes. Eventually, data from 26 participants were used for telomere analysis, and data from 20 participants was used for senescing cell analysis. During the trial, participants did not change their lifestyle, eating habits, or medication.Compared with the baseline, after receiving the 60th hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the telomere length of natural killer (NK) cells, B cells and auxiliary T cells increased significantly, with a growth rate of about 20%-38%, of which B cells changed most significantly, while the proportion of senescies in immune cells decreased by 11%-37% in the entire cell population, and the T-assisted cells were most affected. To the greatest extent, hyperbaric oxygen therapy brought about cellular changes equivalent to the level of cells in the participant's body 25 years ago.Dr Amir Hadanny, Chief Medical Research Officer, Sagol High Pressure Medicine and Research Centre, Shamir Medical Centre, said: "Although interventions such as lifestyle changes and vigorous exercise have some inhibitory effect on telomere shortening, our study shows that in just three months HBOT can achieve telomere extensions far greater than any current intervention. This opens the door to further research into the effects of HBOT on cells and the potential to reverse the aging process. In, this study also provides a new direction for the further application of hyperbaric oxygen medicine and the expansion of the market, not just in reversing aging. As of 2019, China's medical hyperbaric oxygen tank market size reached 522 million yuan, the global market value of hyperbaric oxygen treatment module reached 1.2 billion yuan.
