OBJECTIVE: Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals are associated with several syndromes associated with tendinopathy, including acute calcific tendonitis and Milwaukee shoulder syndrom.

Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals Tendon disease Acute calcific tendinitis Milwaukee shoulder syndrome

Methods: In vitro experiments were used to evaluate changes in human tenocytes cultured with BCP crysta.

Tendon-related genes and extracellular matrix remodeling enzymes Tendon-related genes and extracellular matrix remodeling enzymes

Results: After 24 hours, BCP crystals upregulated tenocyte gene expression of MMP-1, MMP-3, ADAMTS-4 and TIMP-1

BCP crystals upregulate tenocyte gene expression of MMP-1, MMP-3, ADAMTS-4 and TIMP-1

Tenocytes did not alter the expression of scleral and tendon collagen, and BCP crystals did not induce the expression of proinflammatory cytokines

BCP crystals do not induce the expression of proinflammatory cytokines

Conclusions: BCP crystals induce extracellular matrix remodeling enzymes, but not inflammatory cytokines, in tenocytes

BCP crystals induce extracellular matrix remodeling enzymes but not inflammatory cytokines in tenocytes BCP crystals induce extracellular matrix remodeling enzymes but not inflammatory cytokines in tenocytes
