Recently, researchers from the Polytechnic Institute of the Russian Far Eastern Federal University have developed a self-healing concrete material.
This concrete material is suitable for building structures in areas with frequent earthquakes, high humidity areas, and rainy areas.

The researchers used a concentrated solution containing bacilli instead of common water to prepare concrete mixtures.

These bacilli can survive in the pores of dry and cured concrete .

The researchers pointed out that these bacillus spores can survive in the concrete pores for nearly 200 years.

In theory, the service life of this concrete can reach 4 times that of conventional concrete.

Roman Fedyuk, a professor at the Far Eastern Federal University, believes that “concrete is the most widely used structural material in the world, and it is economical and durable.

However, with the extension of service time, concrete materials are affected by various external factors (such as the humidity in the Far East).

In the next step, the researchers plan to develop a reinforced concrete based on the current research results to further enhance the performance of concrete materials through different types of bacteria.
