    From late December 2020 to early April 2021, 32 people living in 15 counties became ill due to the same type of Salmonella enteritidis.
    Among them, 19 patients were children under 10 years old, and 9 patients were over 70 years old.
    Seventeen women and 15 men were affected.
     
      The local infection control agency, the National Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) and the Swedish Public Health Agency (Folk h ä ls omyndigheten) conducted an investigation into the outbreak and carried out the first outbreak update in February, when 12 people were sick.
     
      Through the National Microbiological Surveillance Program, the Swedish Public Health Agency has found several cases of infection with the same type of Salmonella Enteritidis.
    The local infection control department interviewed the patient about the patient's diet and where to buy food before becoming ill.
    This identified the source of the suspected infection as a chocolate wafer sold in the Axfood store.

    Axfood recalled this batch of products from Poland.
     
      Further testing showed that the isolate in the chocolate wafer was the same type as the isolate found in the patient whose source of infection was determined.
     
      Axfood urges consumers who have purchased the relevant product to return it to the store where the product was purchased.
    Axfood’s quality manager said that he is investigating how this happened with the supplier and how to ensure that similar things don’t happen again.
