    Science: Cancer cells repair their own membranes after being attacked by T cells

    A team of researchers from The Genetch Corporation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center have found that cancer tumor cells can survive by repairing a hole in the cell membrane created by a protein released by T cells


    In their paper published in the journal Science, the team describes how they used high-resolution imaging to learn more about what happens when T cells, or cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), attack cancer cells


    Previous studies have shown that the way CTLs kill cells (and sometimes cancer cells) infected by viruses or bacteria is by grabbing onto the cells and then releasing two protein toxins: perforin and granzymes


    Using high-resolution imaging and a technique that allows cells to detach during early permeabilization, the researchers were able to watch CTLs attach to tumor cells and then launch an attack
